Substance Abuse Screening Workshop for Healthcare Providers (SMH)

This training is a one-day workshop that serves as an introduction to Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) for alcohol and other substance use.  Participants in the one-day training will be certified in SBIRT, which is a reimbursable intervention with Medicare/Medicaid.  Specific emphasis will be placed on the evidence behind screening and early intervention, use of evidence-based and validate screening processes, and optimal ways to support brief intervention and referral to treatment processes.  Professionals and students in health related fields will gain introductory knowledge and skills in the best practices of screening and brief intervention.  Motivational Interviewing (MI) will also be introduced as a method of facilitating client/patient communication during the SBIRT process to affect changes in motivation and risky behaviors involving alcohol or other substance uses.

This training is offered by the Indiana State University (ISU) Department of Social Work in conjunction with the SBIRT SAMHSA Grant.  Training materials were designed by the Indiana Prevention Resource Center (IPRC), Indiana University, School of Public Health, Bloomington and adapted by the ISU Department of Social Work SBIRT Project.

Training Objectives:
  1. Describe procedures for early detection of risky substance use and abuse, including the impact of diversity on screening.
  2. Identify the range of risks associated with alcohol & drug use.
  3. Explain the role prevention plays in healthcare.
  4. Practice use of SBIRT screening tools.
  5. Demonstrate introductory SBIRT clinical skills using Motivational Interviewing (MI).
  6. Analyze circumstances that meet criterion for referral to treatment.
