« back to classes page
Community engagement is a communication process among stakeholders who share a common vision and values that benefit communities where people live, learn, work and play. Effective engagement involves developing relationships and understanding the role stakeholders bring to an engagement process. Outreach is a key factor in this process. It is the act of reaching out and initiating contact with individuals, groups, or institutions. However, there is no one-size fits all approach when it comes to community engagement. A range of activities are necessary to reach community stakeholders and engage people critical to achieving outcomes – while motivating people to participate.
The Introduction to Civic and Community Engagement course is a 2-part series for community-serving institutions and individuals who seek to utilize community engagement process. The course will cover a broad range of relevant strategies and best practices for planning meaningful engagement activities. The content will cover: 1) Civic and Engagement Planning, Development and Implementation; and 2) Building an Engagement Plan - Framing Your Own Strategy. Sessions 1 and 2 will break down the process and steps, incorporating techniques that can be adapted across various industry sectors (ex: education institutions, corporate partners, civic and community groups, etc.). It further examines how to structure effective community engagement strategies to ensure that outcomes reflect increased support and participation for services you seek to deliver.
